Umesh Rane, 42, who was shot at by robbers in Bhandup on the morning of Christmas, returned home on Thursday. Doctors call it a miraculous recovery, because the bullet had not just resulted in injuries to Rane’s chest but also to his vital organs — liver, stomach and intestine.
Last year, a study published by researchers from Princeton University, which analysed global trends of antibiotic consumption between 2000 and 2010, discovered that India now consumes the most antibiotics in the world. In 2010, India is estimated to have consumed 12.9 billion pills.
The 69-year-old diabetic rushed to his doctor Ramesh Punjani, who scraped out infected tissue, analysed swabs of blackened skin and finally prescribed him some generic antibiotics. Ramachandran’s bacterial culture and antibiotic sensitivity report threw up no cause for concern.
